Samples of earrings I designed for a cooperative in Smokey Mountain, one of the communities where I'm conducting research. These earrings are made from rolled up magazine paper they collect from the trash and can be made in all shapes and colors. The cooperative is also making bags, clothes, and other handicrafts from recycled materials. They are also running a bakery, a water refilling station, and a materials recovery facility for their buying and selling of plastics, metal, etc. Finding livelihoods programs for the community members is a difficult task, but extremely necessary, as about 70% of the community is unemployed.
